The official Universiade Flame events were attended by Alexander Vysokinsky, Mayor of Yekaterinburg, Evgeny Shurmanov, Vice-President of the Russian Student Sports Union, Dr. Viktor Koksharov, Rector of Ural Federal University (UrFU) and Anton Natarov, Advisor to Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
"Yekaterinburg is one of the centers for the development of student sports in Russia and we are proud of our students, who are the leaders of the sports movement," said Alexander Vysokinsky, Mayor of Yekaterinburg. "Our city is participating in the competitive bid for the right to host the Summer Universiade 2023 and we are confident we will win! And hosting the Winter Universiade 2019 Flame in Yekaterinburg today, we support Krasnoyarsk where the Winter Universiade will be held in March 2019".
Anton Natarov, Advisor to Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, noted in his welcome address that Krasnoyarsk is doing everything possible to make the Winter Universiade 2019 history's greatest: "Participants and guests of the Games will be able to appreciate the modern city infrastructure, world-class sports venues, the Siberian taiga and our warm hospitality. We will be glad to see the residents of Sverdlovsk Oblast in Krasnoyarsk for the Winter Universiade 2019!".
The first Universiade flame bearer of the Yekaterinburg leg was Leonid Rapoport, Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the Sverdlovsk Regional Government, Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation, Master of Sports of the USSR in Speed Skating, who made a point that Yekaterinburg received the Flame of a major international sporting event for the fourth time. "After Yekaterinburg’s participation in the Flame events, our team always went on to win the competitions. We wish the Russian team the best of luck at the Winter Universiade 2019. We know that the team will include representatives from Sverdlovsk Oblast and we will support them!".
The total length of the route in Yekaterinburg was 5000 m. The Flame was carried through the streets of the city by 25 flame bearers, including Ivan Alypov, the bronze Olympic medalist in Cross-Country Skiing, Artem Arefyev, the three-time Paralympic champion in Athletics, Olga Bogdanova, General Manager of the Norilsk Nickel Project Office, Natalia Vorobyeva, the key leader of Siberian Wellness, Anna Solomeina, Head of Human Resources of Urals Alumina Refinery of United Company of RUSAL, Ksenia Kyrmanova, Control of Assets Manager at Coca-Cola HBC Russia and Maria Kartuz, Head of the TASS Ural Regional Information Center.
One of the participants of the Winter Universiade 2019 Flame leg Ivan Alypov, the famous Yekaterinburg skier, won the mass start at the Winter Universiade 2003 Tarvisio, Italy. "For me, the Games were, above all, a tremendous celebration, unity with the fellow athletes and students from different countries. We talked, made friends, it was really great. I hope the Winter Universiade 2019 Krasnoyarsk will be world-class!".
The final stage of the Universiade Flame leg in Yekaterinburg was held in Kirov Square, where the City Cauldron was lit by Sergei Chepikov, the two-time Olympic champion, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, who was the final flame bearer of the Yekaterinburg leg, together with Leonid Rapoport, Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of Sverdlovsk Oblast and Viktor Koksharov, UrFU Rector.
As part of the Winter Universiade 2019 Flame leg in Yekaterinburg, the Universiade Flame visited Boarding School no. 8 where children with special needs could have their photograph taken with the Torch. The event was held on the initiative of Coca-Cola HBC Russia and the Department of Special Olympics in Yekaterinburg that works with people with disabilities. Special Olympics athletes took part in winter sports activities. Olga Kotlyarova, the Russian runner, the World and European Champion, the Olympic Games medalist, was the event's guest of honour.
From Yekaterinburg, the Winter Universiade 2019 Flame will travel to Vladivostok where the next leg of the Universiade Flame is held on November 24.
