According to Swiss Orienteering President Jürg Hellmüller, the inclusion of this discipline in the programme of the Winter Universiade 2021 is an important milestone for the international orienteering community.

"After several World University Championships, this year, ski orienteering was for the first time included in the programme of the world's largest student winter sports event—the Winter Universiade Krasnoyarsk 2019," noted Jürg Hellmüller. “Today our goal is to be part of the Winter Universiade mandatory programme. It is therefore of central importance to participate again in two years' time after our first appearance in Krasnoyarsk.”

Ski orienteering will be the tenth discipline the of the Winter Universiade 2021 programme after Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboard, Curling, Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating and Figure-Skating.
Urs Hunkeler, Managing Director of the Winter Universiade 2021 in Switzerland, is delighted with the decision: "We are very pleased that this discipline will be presented at our competitions. Under the leadership of Swiss Orienteering, the international orienteering community has worked very hard to achieve a successful outcome and to secure funding. I believe that both athletes and spectators will be glad."

To recap, the 30th Winter Universiade 2021 will be held in Switzerland from January 21 to 31. It is expected that more than 2500 people from 50 countries of the world will take part in the competitions.
