Winter Universiade 2019 Experience Will Help Krasnoyarsk to Host 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships
Representatives of the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the Russian Wrestling Federation paid a visit to Krasnoyarsk for assessing the city's capability to host 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships. The Russian Wrestling Federation previously proclaimed its readiness to support the bid of Krasnoyarsk.
The delegation was comprised of UWW Vice Presidents Akhroldjan Ruziev and Natalya Yarygina, UWW Bureau member Peter Bacsa and Executive Director of the Russian Wrestling Federation Alexander Derevyanko.
During the inspection visit, experts assessed the transport system, hotel capacity, F&B services, medical care services, Krasnoyarsk International Airport facilities, as well as Platinum Arena Ice Arena, which is expected to host the event. The guests also took part in meetings with participation of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Krasnoyarsk leaders.
During the working meeting, Chairman of the Regional Government Yuri Lapshin noted that after the Winter Universiade 2019 the task was set to turn Krasnoyarsk into the Russian center of both winter and summer sports. “In this sense, 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships will be of great help to us,” said Yuri Lapshin. - The goal that we set is not just to ensure all the processes related to conducting the competitions, but to organize a holiday for the residents offering a great cultural programme. And we will definitely do it.”
UWW Vice-President Akhroldjan Ruziev highly appreciated the capabilities of the regional center for organizing major international sports events: “Krasnoyarsk's strength is in its significant experience in holding Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Senior International Tournament. Wrestling is a very popular sport in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the most powerful wrestlers from all over the world come here.”
According to the UWW, the event will attract about 4 thousand participants and guests. As part of 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships, competitions will be held in three Olympic sports: Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women's Wrestling.
The Executive Director of the Russian Wrestling Federation Alexander Derevyanko recalled that the experience of organizing international sports events was laid down by Ivan Yarygin back in 1997, when Krasnoyarsk hosted the World Wrestling Championships. And the past Winter Universiade 2019 brought the organizational potential of the region to a new level. “We have confidence in the professionalism of the regional team in organizing major sports events. We discussed all the possible aspects and details of arrivals and departures, accommodation, F&B, training process organization and competitions delivery. And we were pleasantly impressed that in each functional area there are already specialists in charge, because usually it has to be created from scratch,” said Alexander Derevyanko.
Also, the experts held a working meeting with Mayor of Krasnoyarsk Sergey Yeremin. During the event, participants discussed the advantages of the city, which make it a strong competitor in the fight for the right to host the World Championships. And this is not only the successful experience of organizing international events and a special attitude to wrestling of the Krasnoyarsk residents, but also the impressions that the city can leave for the participants and guests of the competitions from various countries.
“Wrestling fulfills a very important mission in Krasnoyarsk. Wrestling traditions have been formed for decades. They are laid in Krasnoyarsk literally at the genetic level. Legendary champions and coaches are our most valuable asset. This year we held the 30th Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Senior International Tournament, which has prestige on the world stage. And, of course, our pride is the Winter Universiade 2019, which showed that Krasnoyarsk is able to host events of the highest international level,” said Sergey Yeremin, Mayor of Krasnoyarsk.
According to the UWW representatives, the upcoming 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships is a very important project. There are special requirements for its implementation, so immediately after determining the host city, the development of a “road map” will begin in all areas: from transport logistics to accommodation and meals for athletes.
The presentation of Krasnoyarsk’s bid will take place in the middle of September in Nur-Sultan as part of 2019 Senior Wrestling World Championships. After that, the final decision will be made at the UWW Executive Committee.
