The first Summer Universiade was organized by Italian Association of University Sports. 985 athletes from 45 countries of the world took part in it. The competition programme included seven kinds of sports.

Summer Universiade 1973 was the VII Summer Universiade, which took place in Moscow, USSR, from August 15 to 25, 1973. The programme included competitions on ten kinds of sports; over 4000 athletes took part in the event. The main site of the Universiade was the Lenin Central Stadium.

The main stages of the competition were held at Lia Manoliou Stadium in Bucharest. During 11 days the event was visited by nearly 200 000 spectators.

XVI Summer Universiade took place in Sheffield, Great Britain. The host country preferred calling it World Student Games. Sheffield City Council regarded this even to be a catalyst for city revival after a slowdown in industrial production. It created a special company called Universiade GD Ltd to work on the games’ infrastructure.

Winter Universiade 1995 was the XVII Winter Universiade. It took place in the Spanish city of Jaka from February 18 to 26, 1995.
Winter Universiade 1997 was the XVIII Winter Universiade. It took place in the South Korean county of Muju from January 24 to February 2, 1997. This Universiade was the most Southern located of all the Winter Universiades, including those planned up to the year 2017 (36°04' North).
Summer Universiade 1997 was the 19th Summer Universiade that took place in Italian island of Sicily from August 20 to 31, 1997. The tournament program included ten kinds of sports. The major part of the competitions took place in the cities of Catania, Palermo and Messina. Some football and basketball matches took place in more than ten other towns of Sicily.

Winter Universiade 2013 (Ital. XXVI Universiade invernale) is the XXVI Winter Universiade, which was held in the Italian province of Trentino from December 11 to 21, 2013.
XXVII World Summer Universiade is a World sport event of students and youth held in the year 2013. It is hosted by Kazan (Russia), the most Northern located city among all the capitals of summer Universiades. 350 sets of medals are hand during the Universiade; this is going to be a record.
The 2015 Winter Universiade is the 27th Winter Universiade and the first one in history that was held in two countries: Slovakia (Strbske Pleso and Osrblie) and Spain (Granada and Sierra Nevada). Spain won the bid, but in 2013 FISU took the decision to hold skiing disciplines in Slovakia. At these Games Team Russia won in total team count, having set a record: 20 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze medals. Team South Korea won the second place (5-9-2) and Team Kazakhstan is third (5-6-0).

The 28th Winter Universiade 2017 was held in Almaty (Kazakhstan) and featured competitions in 12 sports. Bandy was included in the Universiade programme as an optional sport. The Russian Federation was the winner in the overall medal standings at the Winter Universiade Almaty 2017 with 29 gold, 27 silver and 15 bronze medals.
The 29th Summer Universiade 2017 was held in Chinese Taipei. Brasilia (Brazil) and Izmit (Turkey) were among the bidding cities to host the Games. On 29 November 2011, at the FISU meeting, Taipei was chosen as the Host City of the 29th Summer Universiade. It was the first time for Taipei to host a Universiade.
Winter Universiade 2019 was held in Krasnoyarsk from 2 to 12 March 2019. Russia hosted the Winter Universiade for the first time in its history. About 3,000 sports delegates from 58 countries came to Krasnoyarsk. Athletes competed for 76 sets of medals in 11 sports: Biathlon, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Alpine Skiing, Curling, Snowboard, Figure Skating, Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Ski Orienteering, and Bandy. The Russian Federation is the leader of the overall medal standings following the results competitions, having won 112 medals, 41 of which are gold.
